What to do?

The Mercantour National Park, and the upper valley of the river Var is a wondrous maze of pretty paths and lanes with something new to discover at every turn. The last "terre sauvage" in the Alps, this pristine natural paradise comprising eight valleys, is described by National Geographic as a ‘biodiversity hotspot’ teeming with flora and fauna, and home to half the number of plant species known in France.

The footpaths hat access this amazing place run past the front door of the hotel.

At the bottom of this page there are a range of links to help you plan your adventure.

If you visit during spring or autumn, you will be amazed by the vibrancy of colours as the valley comes into bloom. Take a walk up to the plateau to the Chapel of Saint Barnabe and enjoy the captivating view down the valley.

For those interested in local history and culture, the village has a well-preserved Knights Templar church which is classified as an historic monument and is well worth a visit, not least to see the magnificent altar piece by Brea. This is part of the route de Brea and several other churches locally are also graced by his incredible devotional pieces.

The rich history continues in villages close by.

Visit Peone, as well as the fortress town of Entrevault alongside the typical Provencal market town of Annot, or the castle of Queen Jeanne of Provence in Guillaume. These are all within a 45min drive. Ask us for directions and literature on these sites.

If Winter tempts you into the mountains and you long for the rush of the slopes, the hotel is perfectly situated between two ski-stations: Val Pelens and Valberg.

Val Pelens offers a family-orientated resort 20min away from the Hotel Des Étrangers whilst Valberg provides the hustle and bustle of a vibrant resort only 45mins away by car or you can take a bus from Guillaumes. Information is available at the front desk.
