One of the best things about a visit to Les Étrangers is the opportunity to get right into the high mountains and soak up the cooler air amidst the heat of the Provençale summer. But as the summer progresses the warmth of the sun climbs up the valleys, bathing the stunning country with balmy summer weather.
I remember one year when the temperature rose and the air around the hotel became still, and the silent mountains rested under the bright sun. As the heat increased to over 30 degrees, I decided to make the most of the place and took off up the valley to the Col de la Cayolle. There, 7,000 feet above sea level, the temperature was a beautiful, wonderful 20 degrees. By the road there is a green field next to a small stream flowing down the Ubaye valley heading towards Barcelonnette. As I reached the field, I let the dogs out and took off my shoes and socks. I walked towards the stream over the cool grass and, suddenly, reaching the stream, let my feet bathe in the icy cold stream.
Amazing. At Les Étrangers you can go from Provence summer to summer in East Anglia in just a short drive!
